What are some tips for starting a small at home businesss?
I am a full time school teacher and as summer nears, I am preparing to open a small business out of my home as an extra source of income. I have the space, the organization, and the product, but I don't have much revenue yet to do any heavy duty advertising. My product is something that there is a high demand for in the area where I live and I don't plan on branching out anywhere non-local. Any tips or pointers to help me out?I breed feeder mice for reptiles and tarantulas, so I don't think a home showing or hostess party is a useful move. I got into it because the science teacher in my building (I'm the English teacher) started raising cornsnakes and was wasting a ton of money on these sick and genetically defected feeder mice from the pet store. I used to work part time at Petsmart as a small pets and aquatics specialist and know quite a bit about safe breeding practices and population control. I told him it was silly to keep buying unhealthy animals and supporting this petstore that was obviously mistreating its stock, and with some equipment he had in storage and a lot of my own know how and ingenuity began a controlled breeding population. He was so impressed with how healthy and well cared for my mice were that he suggested I add a few more breeding pairs and go into business. I feel I have a good chance to do well b/c unlike many pet shops, I believe that healthy mice make healthy reptiles.

Because it is local you could put up adverts in any of the local shops that will let you. Tell all your friends about it and ask them to pass on the word.As it is local, and you say the product is in demand, once a few people have purchased it and are happy they will let others know.

Depending on your product would this product you could invite people to your home to show them the product, or better yet ask a friend if they would host a product event for you in their home and you can give them a discount on that product. Are you making the product or are you purchasing it from somewhere else and reselling it.Hope this helps.Carol

I would say to try flyers and put them on cars or dress nicely and hand them out to people. Also, to get free advertising you could try giving your product away to certain companies in exchange for advertisement. For example, the owner of a store might value your product and agree to put your flyer on their wall with your business cards. Also some business just provide a bulletin board for local business to pin their cards up on.Another ideas is the local chamber of commerce and other local business groups. They arent too expensive and you can network there and find other people to barter advertising with or get your product concept out to others. You didn't say what your product is so its hard to give more detailed ideas.

Try visiting pet stores and vets in your area and explaining what you're doing. Also, a small add in the newspaper doesn't cost a lot and is usually very effective.

What are some tips for starting a small at home businesss?
Hello,You may have answered your own question in your additional response.I worked a while back marketing college planning seminars for a financial firm. Much of my job involved cold-calling of principals, PTAs, etc...Have you considered physically contacting science teachers at the high schools surrounding your town? What about teachers at local & private colleges? You could put together a fact sheet on the benefits of using your mice vs pet store mice etc...This would cost you very little, but may establish a network of contacts from which you could build.I would also seek out pet expos where you could pay for a small table and have the chance to network with reptile vendors.Just some thoughts!Have a fantastic week & good luck in your new business venture!~Gailhttp://www.HomeWithCandles.com

What are some tips for starting a small at home businesss?
Most people are looking at on-line home businesses instead of "jobs" so the question is, what sorts of things are you interested in? Are you looking to grow a residual income (meaning your income grows every month providing you're working at it) that can become a six figure income quite easily over the years? Or a fast start income? If you're researching this sort of thing, figure out what the going trend is and find something in that trend that you'd like to get into, something you'd get excited about doing! From there, check what each and every company in that field is offering and of course, be aware of the "get rich today" schemes and those that want huge dollars right off the bat. If you find a company that is offering everything you want and more, be sure to dig deeper, find out everything you can and if it still looks good then go for it! Owning your own on-line home based business might be the answer you've been looking for to get that lifestyle and financial freedom that most people only dream of.

Do what you love. You're going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise, so it's really important that you truly deeply enjoy what you do, whether it is running fishing charters, creating pottery or providing financial advice.
Start your business while you're still employed. How long can most people live without money? Not long. And it may be a long time before your new business actually makes any profits. Being employed while you're starting your business means money in your pocket while you're going through the business start up process.
Don't do it alone. You need a support system while you're starting a business (and afterwards). A family member or friend that you can bounce ideas off and who will listen sympathetically to the latest business start up crisis is invaluable.
