It helps the economy. A some of the taxes generated from buying tobbacco goes to the government. Which helps build schools and such.

Although personally in favor of banning tobacco advertisements -- and tobacco altogether -- one could argue...First amendment rights -- why should the advertisers of a legal product be discriminated against?Government intrusion and regulation. FCC and FTC are already too far in control of things.

Ban any advertising for tobacco that children can see. That would to me pretty much do away with it except for places where only adults can go.

Then we should also ban alcohol, junk food, fast food, etc ads. Where do you draw the line?

While unpopular, tobacco is a LEGAL product and the producers of tobacco have every right to sell their product. The first amendment protects their right to advertise their product. You may be confused by arguments regarding the fact that tobacco ads are currently banned form television, people on TV can't be shown drinking alcohol in advertising, etc., but these are all either voluntary bans or bans imposed by private media associations. The bottom line is that there is no legal justification for banning those ads. Meanwhile, the tobacco industry has already voluntarily pulled ads from TV and currently only advertises in literature intended for adults or in places that sell tobacco. Adults can make up their own mind about what products they wish to buy. Who are they hoping to protect? What kid reads Guns and Ammo magazine?

The biggest reason to NOT ban tobacco advertisements are that there are no legitimate (or legal) reasons TO ban it.Perhaps the best way you can prepare for your debate would be first list all of the reasons you can find why people want to ban the advertising of tobacco products. You shouldn't have a hard time building that list.Next, try to separate the reasons that are legitimate concerns from those that are purely "I don't like it" type reasons. You should be able to construct an argument against all of the "I don't like it" pretty easily since there is no actual substance to those lines of thought.Next, extract the reasons which are based on tobacco being an FDA controlled substance. Try to approach these arguments with the logic of comparable items such as alcohol, firearms, prescription drugs and other items. There will also be quite a few "its bad for people" or "bad for children" type arguments. These can be turned on their face by reminding people that it is not the governments job to protect us from ourselves. There are millions of instances of legislation where this is attempted and sometimes passes. You can usually find that this type of legislation is overturned later (think prohibition) when enough people finally decide they want to think for themselves instead of have the government decide for them. You should be left with a few some-what reasoned arguments that do not fit those two categories. Tackle each one of those on its own. Keep in mind that the US has a free market, that freedom of speech/expression is a constitutional right, and that government control of trade historically brings countries to ruin.Good luck.
