I've decided that i want to set up a wholesale website. I have found some distributors that offer the goods i want to sell, books, DVDs, CDs and vinyl.

What would my next steps be? set up a website, list goods, sell goods? is it that simple?
Do i need to register my business and set up banks accounts etc?

Also the distributors i have found require a VAT number. What would i have to do to get one and would it be advisable?

Firstly since you are in Australia, so you can not get a VAT number. A VAT number is the equivalent of an ABN for the UK. You will need to set a an ABN and be registered for GST. I would also suggest you set up a business bank account.
