Hi, im just wondering if anyone knows a bit about alibaba (the site)?
Looking at some of the companies profiles, i have noticed that some have gold status (which means nothing to me), though the issue that has me scratching my head is the whole "TrustPass authentication".

What i am looking at are some name brand clothes from China. They do look great, though its the pricing that has me looking quite skeptically even though the seller has a TrustPass!

If the seller has a trust pass authentication, does this always mean their products are going to be legitimate??

Trust Pass states the following:

"TrustPass serves to provide transparency regarding the identity and legitimacy of your trading partners on Alibaba.com. Only companies that have completed an Authentication and Verification procedure conducted by a third-party credit-reporting agency have a TrustPass Profile."

If anyone has any information about alibaba and trust pass, then please share your info

Hello Brain,

I have used Alibaba to build quite a successful importing business, so I would consider myself someone who knows a bit about how the site runs.
I would not deal with a company that does not have a gold status account and have a trust pass, however this does not insure the products you receive are "legitimate".

"Gold Status" is basically something you pay for as an Alibaba seller, it helps put your products above other products without "Gold Status". Any serious seller through Alibaba would have a "Gold Status" account and it shows that it is much less likely to be a flat out scam. (Based on the fact that most scammers out there like to invest the least amount of money into such a scam).

Now as for a "Trust Pass" accreditation it is basically a business check to make sure you are a real business, operating at your displayed address and so on.

As you can see it is no guarantee to legitimate goods.

Also make sure that your first order (sample order) is a small amount and that you look through all there registered details on Alibaba e.g. company website, company name, phone number and so on to ensure they are legitimate.

Hi Brain,

Ali Baba is an excellent site..unfortuneatley some of the sellers there are not so excellent.
I import alot of furniture and homewares through business's found on Ali Baba, as for brand name apparel, I can personally guarantee that nearly all of it is fake, I am yet to find a legitimate supplier of any name brand or designer goods from China.
They will make a lot of claims about being the registered or licensed factory for the brand etc, but unless you have release papers from the brand's copyright owner, it is fake.
There is no such thing as certificates of authenticity or authentic "paper work" as such.
To be sure the items you are buying are real you will need to be able to become a part of a verifiable paper chain, it looks a little like this:

1. original invoice including release statement
2. Delivery docket to wholesaler / reseller / retailer.
3. Receipt or invoice to you from seller.
4. Customs clearance and duty receipt.

This is not the only way of being able to prove authenticity, but it is the most reliable.
I have been threatened with legal action by a famous running shoe brand who accused me of selling fakes, I was able to provide them with a complete paper trail of the goods I sell, they then were satisfied and withdrew the pending legal action.
They did not like that I was selling their products at greatly discounted prices, but they were unable to prohibit it.

Tread carefully is the best advice I can give.
And truely, if you are after legitimate name brand clothing, the China is not the place to look.

I just came across this forum and saw your post. I noticed that you are talking about TP, as far as I know, Alibaba has already changed it to GGS - gold suppliers international edition. You can go to Alirens.com and search for Gold suppliers international edition.

The B2B company is still in the process of evolving its busines and making changes periodically. you can check Alibaba community for import and export trade information

Just be careful, some suppliers are not good, i am chinese and live in shenzhen,but i do know some people do scams.
