You do not say whether you are asking as a merchant selling goods or a consumer buying goods.
For a merchant selling goods in AUS having your own merchant account with the right processor is the best way to do business. When I say the right processor, there are some who side with consumers when disputes arise and there are some who are more understanding of the merchants situation. Usually, you don't find this out until something comes up, however.
From a merchant's standpoint, PayPal is definitely not on his side. No matter what safeguards they claim to have in place the simple matter is that PayPal is going to placate the customer, rather than risk a chargeback through the card company.
Again, you don't say what type of business you are referring to, wholesale, retail, whatever. If you are importing and the supplier demands a specific payment type, it doesn't matter which is safest. You play their game or do without.
