Default Modern rules of SEO and text?

I'm kind of rusty with my SEO, so please excuse me if I say something obscenely offensive to the industry.Way back when, there was a time when website designers got the bright idea of using keywords in their website and gave them a font color of white to blend with the background. This was eventually blacklisted as a no-no by search engines. In modern times, let's say I have a paragraph of relevant keyword text inside a div. Is it fair game to set the div to be hidden... or a height of 0px... to hide the text from visitors but show it to spiders?Just to be clear, this won't be keyword spam and all the words used WILL be relevant to the content of the site.If it's frowned upon by search engines, let me ask a different question...SCENARIO 2 - Can I place the paragraph of text at the very top of the page, but use a CSS setting to push the margin of it 900px down so it shows up UNDER the main content? That way, visitors will still see the text, but not in the same order as spiders

It just depends on how hardline you want to be. Personally I would say don't do that, as you will be going against the wishes of search engines, and they may well penalise you for it. Also, even if the content you are putting in this hidden div is relevant it doesn't help the user in the long run.For example, when I search for "scary spiders" in Google, the first result uses this excerpt:"omg!!! that is the most scary things i've ever seen!! how did you get those shots!! spiders are my biggest fear!! could you imagine one of those crawling on ..."Now when I go to that page, it may well be about scary spiders, but I also expect to see that text somewhere, if I don't I'm gonna be all "Where is the hysterical arachnophobe dude!", if I don't see it I'm going to trust the site a little less.Bottom line. Don't do it. You don't need to, just make the content relevant, that's what people want from the site in the first place. Use those words in the content itself.HTH
