Default Why are cars so expensive in Australia ?

I know you have the rip off import charges to contend with but even so they are still sky high. Is it because they want everyone to buy the local made crap (Ford, Holden) ?I just priced up a few European vehicles and the price hike ran at between 100 - 150% more !!!!!!!EXAMPLE:- A 5yr old Porsche 911 in the UK costs around $47,000AUD. The exact same car in Australia is a whopping £140,000AUD. That is just plain legalised robbery. Shipping would only account for about $4000 and as for complience with Aussie regulations I think it is safe to say if it is safe enough for use in a major european city it's certainly gonna pass with flying colours for use on Australian roads........or are they special in some way ?Got it ! Maybe the extra 100k is for a roo bar, Australian made of course.

It's like the $10 beer at the game, they charge it because they can...."captive audience"......fly somewhere ,buy the car, and ship it yourself.....surely this would be less expensive....... do I detect an undertone of bitterness here mate?

You live on an ISLAND, dude. A BIG one,for sure, but still, you have to import everything. maybe your government wants to keep imports to a minimum, and has a high luxury tax. How expensive are imported Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet cars, if any available? Might just be a luxury tax issue. Sorry to hear you can't afford your dream car. Me neither, those darn '57 Chevrolet convertibles are darn near untouchable at $150,000 or more now over here in the USA, restored. Just a cryin' shame....The Gremlin Guy

We get raped by every governemt tax you can think of, and of course there is more, we have to pay the import costs. But as you say it still isn't going to match your european costs. hang on a sec, what is the conversion from AUD to Pound? is it that you are paying £47,000 for one that we pay $140,000? because if so, then after converting the currency, your price(£47,000) is about equal to about $102,000 aussie dollars. so there really isn't a big difference once yu factor in the tax and import costs, not to mention we have one importer each for most of these prestige models, so it makes it difficult when one company brings every porche inot the c ountry. Anyway who in Australia wants a porche, they are for single short fat old bald men wanting to get some wind through their receeding hair before it's all gone, they usually cruise around the party end of town looking to pick up some young women but look very sleazy.Buy an M3, thats real class, real power, real good looking and definitly commands respect on the road in Australia.
