Because Oz is not in the EU, so import duty is payable.

'onestepdownfromgod' is right, there are taxes to pay. not just import tax either. wine, being an 'excise' good attracts excise duty as well as import duty and vat. and its calculated as followscost of wine + shipping = import valueimport value + import duty + excise duty, then plus vat at 17.5%just a side note, french wine also attracts excise duty and vat, but no import duty since coming from within the eu, its not seen (for customs purposes) as an import. except when you travel, you get a personal allowance so no taxes are taken)
