Default Will GM and Ford ever import their Australian counterparts Ute's to the USA?

Ute's are basically full size cars with the B pillar back cut off and made into a pick up bed like the old Elcamino's and Ranchero's. With the new stringent CAFE mpg regs coming up will GM import the Holden Ute or Ford the Falcon Ute? GM could brand it a GMC and vastly improve their CAFE ratings and since alot of companies that buy trucks that really don't need them for deliveries could save hundereds possibly thousands in gas costs by buying a Ute instead of a truck. GM is already importing the vehicle the Ute is based off of and branding it the Pontiac G8 and there are rumors that GM will import the Ute or a Wagon for Pontiacs lineup.

They could import them, and there's a chance of GM making them domestically. Here's a few articles on the likelihood of that happening. They look neat, I hope it happens.http://www.leftlanenews.com/holden-ute-future.htmlhttp://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/19/bob-lutz-on-us-ute-odds-are-it-will-happen/

With General Motors, the cost is currently too high to import the Holden since it's an Australia specific car.As for Ford though, the engine for the Falcon is manufactured in the US, as well as much of their interior components. It would be cheaper. And with the potential end to the Ranger, it's highly likely that Ford will bring either the Courier from South America/Mexico or the Falcon Ute to replace it.There have been many rumours that the new Falcon is being engineered to be available as a Right Hand Drive vehicle, with potential to replace the Crown Victoria within the next five years.

GM might. Theirs is built on the Zeta platform along with the G8 and new Camaro. It would be very easy to bring over because they wouldn't have to change anything to pass American laws.Starting next year (2010 model) GM will move production of the G8 and Camaro to Canada allowing Australia to build more of their versions of the cars. Right now their is not enough capacity.
