they saw me with the same jacket on that was stolen from the store. these ladys approached me 3 days later accusing me of stealing the jacket but told them I had bought it. they have no video, no witnesses and are pressing charges on me. i heard someone cannot approach you once your off their property. what are my legal rights??

no they need proof. do you have the receipt from the jacket or did your purchase it with a credit card where you can prove you made a purchase from that store?

You are exactly right. My son is one that works the cameras, and deals with all the shop lifters. He is the one that catches them. He can not legally even stop someone that has went into the dressing room and came back out not carrying out what they took in. Even when he knows they have stolen clothes. He has to physically have it on tape showing them concealing the item/items and then there is still so many regulations that sometimes he still can not stop them. You need to plead your case with a attorney and counter sue them for falsely accusing you without evidence. best of luck to you.

They can't do anything, they have to witness it at the time of the theft and confront you then while you are in the store. These women must be crazy to have approached you. In any case I assume you have the receipt.

I have a problem with this question. You never once deny that you stole it, you said "I told them I had bought it". I suspect there is more to this than you are admitting. Also, why would "these ladies" approach you 3 days later? Was this on the street or in the store? Sorry, something smells fishy.

The most the business can do, as far as criminal liability is concerned, is make a report to the police. It will then be up to the police to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed. Three days later???? If the business reports this to police, that report will certainly go to the bottom of the investigations pile.

Where is your receipt? That's all the proof you need. And I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to steal a jacket and then wear it to the store they stole it from.
