Default A local convenience store refuses to accept $100 or $50 dollar bills, is this legal?

They have a sign up that says nothing larger than a $20 bill accepted. I thought any business in the U.S. had to accept any and all legal U.S. bills.

Of course its legal. They run their business. Would you expect them to accept a one thousand dollar bill also because it is legal tender?

Well if they don't have change for the large bill in the store, obviously they wouldn't have to accept it.Or if the bill is tattered or looks suspicious they aren't required to, for their own protection.-Tony Bhttp://www.vintagevhs.net

I used to work in a convenience store and their reasoning is that they don't want you to have more than $50 in your draw at all times, which is totally unreasonable because when you get busy the money builds up and they expect you to stop waiting on the customers and make a drop in the safe. This also makes the place not to be a good target to get robbed! Alot of times they have signs up stating that they don't have any more than $50 on hand at all times. Also because of counterfeiting but then again twenty's are alot easier to pass off then large bills!

NO this is not legal. The whole reason the US Treasury spent a fortune (pun intended) to redesign the paper currency of the USA is so that the bills can be held up to light and determined whether counterfeit or not. On the same note, it is illegal for stores to deny use of debit credit cards under a certain amount (e.g., $10). I work in insurance law and I know this to be true by federal statute.

Default

I can really understand the reasoning behind the stores making such a policy, especially on small items 50 and 100 dollar bills that are counterfiet are going to be the easiest to convert for a good return. However, I think that rather then these stores doing this they need to find some solution that will allow them to accept and give change, but at the same time attempt to prevent counterfiet being passed over. There would have to be some form of electronic safe drop system that could check the security features of a bill, while also being able to dispense sufficient change if needed.
